Holly Springs

The town of Holly Springs can be found 36 miles north of downtown Atlanta near the center of Cherokee County, and resting between Woodstock, to the south and Canton, to the north.

It can be safely asserted that without the railroads in the early days, a great number of today’s cities would not exist, and Holly Springs is no exception.

After years of talking about a railroad through Holly Springs, actions were at last teamed with words and by 1878, the Marietta and North Georgia Railroad had finally arrived. By 1879 the tracks had advanced to Canton, the county seat and by 1887 had made it to North Carolina. Holly Springs industries could finally start expanding their business reach by exporting their goods such as poultry, granite, serpentine rock, lumber, and agricultural products to other states – a boon to the local economy.

In 1902 the Marietta and North Georgia Railroad was bought out by the Louisville and Nashville (L&N) Railroad, and in 1906 the town we know today simply as, “Holly Springs” was finally incorporated as the “Town of Holly Springs”. And finally, in 1910, the L&N Railroad built a depot that was more than a place for folks to wait inside, out of the rain but was a storage place as well for the freight awaiting long-distance shipping.

In 1974 the L&N Railroad sold the depot to the City of Holly Springs for the exorbitant amount of $800. In the late ‘90s, with the building being in a sad state of disrepair, the City received a grant from the National Transportation Enhancements Fund and along with donated labor and money from local citizens was finally able to restore the historic old depot. “

Modern-day Holly Springs not only has a beautifully restored train depot but also has the distinction of being a great place to live and raise a family. The city has, and continues to win many awards each year, such as “Best Suburb to Buy a House,” and for six years running, the “Safest City in Georgia” and more.
